  • Be Internet Legends - A Visit from Google & Damian Hinds

    Published 10/12/18

The Secretary of State for Education Visits Herne!

We were delighted to receive a visit from Damian Hinds MP last Friday.  He came to see an inspirational assembly on Internet Safety led by Google and promoted by Parentzone.  He was very impressed with the children and he managed to have a good chat to Mr Markham about funding for schools.

Thank you to Google for their fantastic assembly.  Please talk to your child if they are in Years 4, 5 or 6 about  SHARP – ALERT – SECURE – KIND – BRAVE.  These key words will help them to remember the key messages from the assembly and we’ll be sharing this with Year 3 and all parents very soon! Google Parentzone have designed a new website full of games for children to access.  Visit:

  • Vote for a Running Track for Herne

    Published 08/11/18

15/11/18 UPDATE: Check out our new Sports Captain Video for more reasons why we need your votes!!

Here at Herne, we are really keen to promote healthy lifestyles (even if we like the odd cake!) and to achieve this we’d love to put an all-weather running track around the perimeter of our school field.  This track would be about 1.5 metres wide and 500 metres long.  This means that twice around the track would be a 1 km run.  For some of our children, they would be encouraged to walk before taking up running, but this will help the school to tackle childhood obesity, something that affects a large number of children at Herne.

This is likely to cost the best part of £50,000 and is a huge investment for our school and children in the local community, not least the junior runners in the RunnyHoneys group.  We are grateful for their help and their mission to achieve this fantastic facility and have this based at Herne and we really need your help to make this dream a reality!  A community grant is available through Aviva but to stand a chance of getting a huge contribution from them, we have to get as many votes as possible.  Follow this link and add your votes (each person can vote 10 times) to the 5,344 votes that we have received so far.  There is also a Crowd Funding section where we have already raised £780.  We can do this if you spread the word and register your vote.  There’s also a handy ‘How to’ video on the link to show you how to go about supporting this project.

  • Mr Markham's Skydive for FitzRoy (watch the videos here)

    Published 06/07/18

Thank you so much to everyone who supported the idea of throwing Mr Markham out of a plane for FitzRoy.  The amount raised, including Gift Aid, amounted to over £1,500!  With such a significant amount above the original target of £1,000, you took Mr Markham to new heights and he actually skydived from 15,000ft, nearly 3 miles up!  See our website for two videos from different camera angles to watch his adventure.  Here is the link:

    Published 14/06/18

Year 3 had an amazing Saxon day; the costumes and enthusiasm were outstanding!  They performed in a Rainbow Theatre production, which looked at the end of the Roman occupation and the rise of the Saxons in Britain.

They created their own compositions based on Saxon Gods, made brooches and learnt about Runes. A fantastic day was had by all.
